THE FACE OF ZAMBIAN TWINS: ‘Joel and Noel’

ZAMBIA is one country that is blessed with twins and multiple births but few twins have come really together like Joel and Noel Mwanza on the timeline with the mystical saying says: “two heads are better than one.”

However, the bantam thought will not lead us not sideline other notable Zambian twins, the adores of Chileshe and Mulenga Kapwepwe, the Secretary General for Common Market and Southern Africa-COMESA and former Board Chairperson for Zambia Notional Broadcasting Cooperation-ZNBC respectively.

Today, Joel and Noel are the most recognized twins in Zambia which saw them been nominated for 2020 Mwape Peer Awards under the Leadership Award category endorsed by Mike Mubanga, the Agency Journalist for Children International Zambia.

“I am writing this with the full endorsement that Joel and Noel deserves this noble award because their generosity surpasses volunteerism, it’s aimed at reaching out to the less privileged no matter how much less money you remain with.” Part of endorsement reads.

As Sam Underwood put it that the special relationships between twins is that, if there's anyone else in the world that's going to get or be confident that you need, it’s an identical twins. Joel and Noel have devoted most of their time to running a profitless but life changing path that has touched hundreds of people in Zambia.

The Mwanza brothers have partnered with Walusungu Silweya also a twin, journalist and philanthropist to set up a unique initiative for Twins called Twins Plus Foundation, with the hope of mobilising Twins, Triplets, Quadruplets and Multi Birth people across Zambia to champion positive change.

Though children are the reward of life, the pair are the only children in the family of two, born identical on February 17th, 1993 at Chongwe's Mphanshya General Hospital with 10-minutes difference. The youngest twin Joel holds a Diploma in Journalism and Public Relations whereas Noel holds a Diploma in Management Studies.

Joel and Noel through Twins Plus Foundation, they moved from one place to another implementing charity works through assisting orphans, widows and other vulnerable children. They have also made several donations to Hospitals and Correctional facilities, and most notably, they took time to stretch their hands to mobilize resources for Siamese Twins (Bupe and Mapalo), Lusaka’s abandoned triplets and some quadruplets.

In joining the country in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, the twins is currently conducting sensitization messages on social media and has made donations of facemasks, handwashing soap, various school supplies and Sugar worth K9,000 to two community schools in Chilanga and Kafue districts.

This decision was motivated by the fact that many households especially those outside the central town have had their incomes affected due to the pandemic, which has halted most operations and some jobs have been lost.

This is why the Twins embarked on the cause to support school going children with the necessary school supplies required, a move that showed generosity, love and support inspired by the art of giving.

Noel draws inspiration from his uncle Leo Chakufyali and Legendary African Footballer Samuel Eto'o whereas Joel draws his inspiration from Barrack Obama and TV Personalities Costa Mwansa and Master Chimbala.

So many good things come in pairs, like ears, socks and panda bears. But, best of all are the set of twins, with extra laughter and double grins. As it for Joel and Noel is  "sometimes miracles come in pairs."
